Haaland Secures Democratic Nomination for New Mexico Governor
Debra Haaland has officially clinched the Democratic nomination for the gubernatorial primary in New Mexico. The former U.S. congressperson and interior secretary under President Joe Biden is set to face Republican Greg Hull in the upcoming election.
Haaland achieved a significant victory, garnering 72.3% of the votes with 98% counted, while her opponent, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, received 27.7%, as reported.
“Thank you, New Mexico, for believing in what we can build together. I am honored to formally accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for Governor of New Mexico,” she shared on X.
On the Republican front, Rio Rancho Mayor Hull secured 47% of the votes, defeating the competition by more than 12,000 votes. Doug Turner, a small business owner, followed with 36.9%, while Duke Rodriguez, the former New Mexico Department of Human Services Secretary, managed 16.1%.
“Thank you, New Mexico! I’m honored to be your Republican nominee for governor,” Hull expressed on X.
Haaland and Hull will face off in the general election this November, vying for the position of governor in the state. With New Mexico’s term limits in place, the current governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, is finishing her second term and did not enter the race.
