Former White House spokesman Andrew Bates is set to testify before the House Oversight Committee on Friday morning, as the investigation into allegations surrounding former President Joe Biden continues. Bates, who moved up from an assistant role to become a senior spokesperson, was a key member of Biden’s communication team until the president’s resignation in January 2025.
He is the 11th former Biden official to be summoned in this investigation, and notably, the ninth to do so voluntarily.
Interestingly, Bates mentioned that he could have earned up to $8 million had Biden been re-elected.
Three former aides—Anthony Bernal, Annie Tomasini, and physician Kevin O’Connor—were compelled to appear due to congressional subpoenas.
The inquiry led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, seeks to determine if Biden’s senior aides are concealing evidence of the former president’s mental decline. There’s also a focus on whether executive decisions were signed without his full awareness, particularly later in his term.
Democrats, on the other hand, view the investigation as unnecessary, criticizing it as a waste of time. Rep. Comer has dismissed Democratic concerns about Biden’s aides as trivial, suggesting that little effort has been made to gather meaningful insights.
Bates has been a significant public advocate for Biden’s capabilities, particularly during the latter months of his presidency. There’s also a belief within the committee that Bates’ extensive responsibilities and interactions in the Oval Office deserve closer examination, especially in light of claims regarding Biden’s effectiveness during his term.
As tensions rise, Democrats call for a shift in focus from scrutinizing Biden to addressing the healthcare needs of the American populace. Representative Robert Garcia remarked that the Republicans seem overly fixated on Biden, redirecting attention instead on what truly matters for the nation.
Next week, former press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is expected to appear before the committee as well.
