Former Biden staffer calls 'inappropriate' adult clothing at Disneyland 'truly troubling'

Yemisi Egbewole, a former staffer in the Biden administration, recently shared a TikTok video where she expressed concerns about adult attire at Disneyland during a recent visit. She believes that social norms in places meant for children are being compromised.

“It’s really troubling when adults consciously opt for inappropriate clothing in places designed for kids, and I think we should have more discussions about this,” Egbewole remarked.

She emphasized that while personal expression is important, it shouldn’t come at the cost of the established social expectations in family-friendly environments.

“There are unwritten rules that govern behavior in these settings, even if they’re not explicitly stated,” she noted.

During her Disneyland visit, Egbewole pointed out specific instances that illustrated her worries. For example, she said, “You shouldn’t have to see someone dressed inappropriately while watching a young child meet their favorite characters for the first time.”

Anticipating criticism from those who might label her views as overly strict, she said, “When you voice these issues, some people react like you’re suggesting we’re going back to a more puritanical society.”

Egbewole countered that perspective by calling for a clear line between spaces meant for adults and those intended for children. “It’s not about restricting people—it’s about reclaiming these environments,” she insisted.

She pointed out similar discussions happening in other public spaces, like the Houston Rodeo, observing a concerning trend. “Adults seem to think they’re in a club, while it’s actually just an amusement park intended for kids,” she explained. “For them, it’s a fun carnival experience.”

Reflecting on a contrasting experience at a Beyoncé concert, Egbewole highlighted environments where people feel free to express themselves. “At a concert, everyone dresses as they please. Can you see the difference?” she asked.

She pushed back against the notion that individuals can wear anything anywhere. “I often see comments online saying people should be free to live as they choose. But this isn’t the right context for that,” she stated. “A trip to see Mickey and Minnie isn’t the time for that kind of freedom.”

“We adults are aware of these social guidelines, and kids are too. It makes them uncomfortable when these boundaries are crossed,” she added. “We maintain order by discouraging inappropriate behavior from those who ought to know better.”

Attempts to get feedback from Disney on this perspective went unanswered.
