Former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was convicted of two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.
Tuscaloosa County District Judge Joan Yanick last week sentenced Buggs to one year of hard labor, with 60 days to be served, with the remainder of the sentence suspended for two years “depending on the defendant’s behavior.”
Bugs is not allowed to own or be near guns, and is prohibited from owning dogs or cats.

The 27-year-old man turned himself in late last month in Tuscaloosa on suspicion of animal cruelty after two dogs were found “severely malnourished, emaciated and neglected” in the backyard of a rental home where he was staying.
Buggs is accused of leaving a white and gray pit bull and a black Rottweiler without food or water in the backyard of his Tuscaloosa home. The pit bull was allowed to roam free on a screened porch, but the Rottweiler was kept in a metal cage exposed to direct sunlight.

According to court documents obtained by Tuscaloosa Patch, police received a tip about a dog being left on a porch on March 28. Witnesses said Buggs had moved out of the home on March 19 due to over $3,100 in back rent.
Last month, while awaiting sentencing on the animal cruelty charge, he was arrested and booked into Tuscaloosa County Jail on a domestic violence/theft charge, according to jail records.
The Chiefs released him a little more than a week after his domestic arrest.
