Former CIA Director Discusses Operation to Rescue U.S. Airmen
On “The Sunday Briefing,” former CIA director Dan Hoffman talked about a reported CIA deception operation that may have diverted Iranian forces from the U.S. airmen who had gone missing. This tactic provided some context for the mission that ultimately led to a successful rescue deep in enemy territory.
According to Hoffman, the CIA aimed to mislead the Iranians into thinking a sea rescue was imminent, while, in reality, the airmen were being extracted from mountainous terrain.

The CIA also played a key role in tracking both the location of the missing airmen and the movements of Iranian forces. Hoffman noted, “The CIA was there to track [the airmen’s] location… At the same time, they were monitoring Iranian security forces as they attempted to find our personnel.” The ongoing deception operation was described as quite unusual.
Details Emerge About the Daring Rescue
Hoffman elaborated that the strategy for the operation could have been quite straightforward. Essentially, the CIA just needed to spread disinformation in places where they knew it would reach the Iranian authorities.
“They would have tapped into communication channels that Iranian forces were likely monitoring. Iran…has advanced cyber capabilities. By providing a mix of genuine and misleading information, we could establish a credible channel for the deception operation,” he explained.
Following the rescue of a U.S. Air Force Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) who had to eject from his F-15E fighter jet, Hoffman commented on the challenges faced: “I’ve heard it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. I think it’s more like searching for a needle in a stack of needles. It’s extremely tough.” The WSO spent around 36 hours in hiding and would have had to depend on skills honed in military survival training.
