Former CNN colleague doubts if Don Lemon qualifies as a journalist

Controversy Surrounds Don Lemon’s Journalism Credibility

Former CNN editor-in-chief Chris Sillizza is raising questions about Don Lemon’s status as a journalist in light of Lemon’s participation in a recent protest at a church in Minnesota. This comes after Lemon was involved in livestreaming an anti-ICE protest, which has sparked debate about the role of journalists in activism.

Sillizza, who worked with Lemon at CNN before they were both let go, published an article on his Substack titled, “Is Don Lemon a Journalist?” In the piece, he expressed his uncertainty about the definition of journalism today, citing figures in the media such as the “Pod Save America” hosts and Ben Shapiro, both of whom he believes don’t fit the traditional journalism mold.

While Sillizza emphasized that he and Lemon weren’t close friends, he acknowledged their amicable relationship. He mentioned that Lemon is clearly dedicated to his newfound role as an independent creator, often using provocative language in his own writings, like calling Trump “an international joke.” Sillizza pondered, “Is the term ‘partisan journalist’ an oxymoron?”—hinting at the ongoing evolution of journalism.

He continued, voicing his concerns about the changing landscape of journalism itself. There seems to be a blurred line between what constitutes journalism, activism, and partisan reporting, he noted. Sillizza pointed out that the influx of independent media complicates how we define credible information sources.

Don Lemon Stands Firm Amidst Allegations

In response to the situation, Lemon has insisted on his role as a journalist and has stated that he was merely reporting on the protests rather than participating. “I stand proud, and I stand tall,” he remarked, addressing the public in a recent YouTube show. He clarified, “This isn’t over yet,” expressing confidence that he would continue his work regardless of the legal challenges he faces.

Lemon’s legal troubles stem from the Justice Department’s investigation into the protest, which reportedly targeted him due to alleged ties between the church’s pastor and ICE. A federal judge recently dismissed charges against Lemon, yet other legal pressures may still linger.

Regardless of the challenges, Lemon declared he would not let these situations compromise his journalistic ambitions, even jokingly suggesting that he could embrace a comedic persona akin to Jimmy Kimmel if necessary. “Go ahead and make me the new Jimmy Kimmel if you like,” he challenged, maintaining his stance that his First Amendment rights protect his reporting endeavors.

In the midst of these controversies, Lemon’s attorney argued that his actions were in line with his longstanding career as a journalist and that any efforts to silence him would be met with vigorous opposition.
