Troy Aikman’s Thoughts on NFL Injuries

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman recently shared his perspective on the increase of early-season injuries in the NFL. During an episode of the “Rodeo Time Podcast,” he suggested that rules aimed at protecting players may inadvertently be leading to more injuries.

Aikman reminisced about training camps in Wichita Falls, Texas, where the Cowboys practiced twice daily. He noted that, despite modern training camps seeming less intense than those in the ’80s and ’90s, players might not be adequately prepared for the demands of the NFL season right from the get-go. “I think they only wear the pads maybe once a week, and it’s mostly walk-throughs,” he said, adding that these changes make practices more player-friendly but arguably less effective.

He pointed out that during contract negotiations, owners typically hold the upper hand financially, leading players to accept reduced practice frequency. “They tend to compromise when it comes to actually being on the field,” he remarked.

Aikman mentioned that coaches often find themselves on the sidelines during these negotiations. “They have to wait and see how often they can work with players,” he noted, emphasizing that the rise in injuries, particularly soft tissue strains, could be linked to the current training approach. He believes training alone isn’t the same as being on the field with teammates.

While Aikman supports initiatives aimed at enhancing player safety, he expressed concerns that some measures might have unintended negative consequences. He referenced high-profile players like Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson, who missed significant playing time due to injuries early last season.

The topic of player safety remains critical, especially as the league considers expanding its schedule, including potential games on Thanksgiving Eve and possibly moving to an 18-game season in the future.
