Former Democratic President Criticized for Being 'Very Scoldy Lately'

Obama’s Recent Advocacy for Democratic Resilience

On Monday, journalist and CNN contributor Lulu Garcia-Navarro discussed former President Barack Obama’s recent call for Democrats to embrace a more resilient approach. She suggested that his traditional disciplinary stance may resonate with modern Democratic supporters.

In a panel discussion on “Arena,” Obama pushed for Democrats to exhibit more determination, urging them to move past their frustrations and uphold freedom of speech, even when it may be uncomfortable for the party. Garcia-Navarro critiqued this message, noting an increasingly admonishing tone in Obama’s rhetoric.

“I’ve read his recent speech, and he’s been pretty stern,” Garcia-Navarro observed. “He’s been vocal about the need for people to step up, indicating that some are retreating rather than standing firm.”

Garcia-Navarro expressed concern that Obama’s tone might alienate the very voters Democrats need to reach. She remarked, “I don’t see this resonating anymore. During the election, he emphasized that black men should unite to support black women, but I feel like Obama isn’t connecting with the Democratic base as he once did.”

Obama shared his insights during a private fundraiser in New Jersey, hosted by Governor Phil Murphy and his wife, as Democrats reassess their strategy following electoral setbacks, looking ahead to the mid-term elections in 2026 and the presidential race in 2028.

“You can’t say you’re a Democrat and feel disheartened, thinking you shouldn’t act,” Obama stated. “If you care about free speech, don’t remain silent. When faced with difficult conversations, you need to uphold that right. Sometimes it takes courage.”
