Former Justice Department Official Acquitted After Sandwich Incident

A former Justice Department official has been found not guilty of assault after an incident in which he threw a sandwich at a federal agent earlier this year in Washington, D.C.

Sean Dunn reportedly hit a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer with a sandwich back in August. The charges against him included assault and obstructing a federal officer.

The jury took approximately seven hours to deliberate before delivering their verdict. Following the announcement, Dunn was seen embracing his attorney in the courtroom.

During the trial, Dunn’s defense argued that the act wasn’t violent; rather, he threw the sandwich as a form of protest against President Donald Trump’s decision to send the National Guard to Washington, D.C.

It’s worth noting that videos of the incident circulated widely online, and many local residents viewed Dunn as a sort of hero for opposing Trump’s actions.

Dunn’s lawyers acknowledged he threw the sandwich at CBP officers but described it as a symbolic gesture, an “exclamation point” in expressing discontent with the military presence in the city.

Defense attorney Julia Gatto emphasized, “It was a harmless act of exercising his right to speak. He is overwhelmingly innocent.”

On the other hand, prosecutors argued that political expression did not offer protection against the assault charges.

At the time of the incident, Dunn served as an international affairs specialist in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice. Following his arrest, he was terminated from his position by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who criticized him on social media for being “an example of the deep state.”
