Former ESPN Sportscaster Survives Ejection from RV Onto California Freeway

Shocking dashcam video shows a former ESPN sportscaster thrown from his family's RV after his wife fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a median on a California highway.

Cordell Patrick noticed his wife had fallen asleep at the wheel when he unbuckled his seatbelt to go to the bathroom. He grabbed the steering wheel and moved to take control of the RV, but before he could, the car hit the median and Patrick was thrown onto the other side of the highway.

Patrick is believed to have been blown about 170 feet into the air.

“All I think about is getting hit by a car” Patrick Said K.T.L.A. “I'm on the busiest freeway in Los Angeles County, and the only thing that went through my head was, 'I'm going to die soon.'”

A white SUV can be seen swerving to avoid Patrick.

“I just dragged myself and put my back on the median until help arrived, and help came quickly,” Patrick told the outlet.

Driver Alf Smithee stopped to help Patrick.

“I noticed the man was still lying in the road,” Smithy told KTLA.

“I was just trying to move the car away from him. He was there the whole time. [conscious]. That was the shocking part. ”

Smithy continued. “I asked him his name, I asked him all kinds of things, and he was there the whole time. He knew he had broken his arm. He knew he had broken his leg. I knew.”

Patrick's injuries are extensive. The former ESPN commentator broke several bones, dislocated his shoulder, received 17 stitches in his head, and suffered a large rash that covered most of his body.

But as for Patrick, he's happy just to be alive. And he knows exactly who to thank for that.

“It was divine intervention,” Patrick told KTLA. “If you didn't think there was more power before this, I'm living proof and I have living testimony to tell.”
