Trump Calls for Investigation into Former FBI Agent
On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump urged an investigation into Walter Giardina, a former FBI agent. This came through a post on Truth Social that reignited interest in Giardina’s involvement in several prominent cases linked to Trump and current senior trade adviser Peter Navarro.
In his post, Trump labeled Giardina a “dirty cop” and demanded immediate scrutiny for him and a group of others he described as corrupt. This group includes figures like Jack Smith, Lisa Monaco, and Andrew Wiseman, among others, whom Trump accused of being behind what he termed a “witch hunt” regarding the January 6 events.
Giardina has been previously dismissed from the FBI. Criticism concerning his actions has grown, particularly from past officials in the Trump administration, including Navarro. Navarro stated that Giardina had a significant role in orchestrating alleged politically motivated investigations by the FBI, which span from the 2016 “Russian collusion” inquiry to January 6.
In multiple interviews, Navarro claimed that Giardina played a critical part in the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, which led to a review funded by Clinton and also influenced the Mueller investigation. Reports from whistleblowers suggested that Giardina might have deleted FBI laptops and destroyed vital government records related to this investigation.
Navarro has also connected Giardina to other FBI probes, including the Crimson River and Arctic Frost cases, arguing that these activities signify a year-long campaign of political targeting against Trump and his associates. He recalled, in particular, that Giardina supervised his arrest at Reagan National Airport in 2022, alleging that he wasn’t read his rights or permitted legal counsel prior to his detention.
During this arrest, which was linked to Navarro’s defiance in testifying before a House committee concerning January 6, he noted that he had refused based on presidential privilege. He also mentioned that his fiancée was present when the incident occurred.
Navarro has suggested that Giardina’s actions are part of a larger pattern of political targeting environments within the FBI and Justice Department. In his interviews and his book titled *I Went to Jail So You Don’t Have To*, he goes further to mention that Giardina is married to Larry Potts, a former FBI agent known for his involvement in the Waco and Ruby Ridge incidents during the 1990s.
According to whistleblower accounts discussed in Senate oversight, Giardina has participated in various activities that he describes as legitimate operations against Trump and his allies, including covert surveillance authorizations and constitutional investigations.
