Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (Democrat) plans to run for California governor in 2026 after incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom reaches his two-term limit.

Villaraigosa, who has not held public office since leaving Los Angeles City Hall in 2013, joins a crowded field of potential Democratic candidates, including: Deputy Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Former State Comptroller Betty YeeState Senator. Tony Atkinsand the state school superintendent. Tony ThurmondAll are vying to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is serving his second and final term in office.
In his announcement, Villaraigosa, 71, highlighted his ability to work with both Democrats and Republicans during his time as mayor and speaker of the California Assembly, as well as his track record of balancing budgets and strengthening public safety and education.
