The former head of the British Labour Party, who has been accused of anti-Semitism, is advocating for New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani during a fundraiser for the Democratic Socialists of America this Sunday.
Jeremy Corbyn, expelled from the party in 2020 due to criticisms of its handling of anti-Semitism issues, emphasized his involvement in organizing a phonebank event alongside the New York DSA, urging New Yorkers to back the democratic socialists.
“Let’s get Zoran across the finish line and make New York affordable for everyone!” the controversial figure posted on Facebook.
Corbyn’s participation in the fundraiser sparked criticism, especially given the backdrop of allegations against him. His office was found to have inadequately responded to anti-Semitism complaints, which raised concerns from a government watchdog.
Current Labour leader and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeled it a “shameful day” for the party, which moved to suspend Corbyn, who continues to deny the allegations and now serves as an independent in parliament.
His involvement in the event led opponents of Mamdani to criticize it as further evidence of the candidate’s own supposed anti-Semitism.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo commented on social media, stating, “@ZohranKMamdani’s phone banking of Jeremy Corbyn (whose leadership was found to have committed acts of illegal discrimination against Jews) tells you everything you need to know.” He added, “New York doesn’t need a politics of moral compromise. We need leadership that rejects anti-Semitism, extremism, and division in all its forms.”
Cuomo is currently the second-place candidate and has intensified his critiques of Mamdani, who secured the Democratic primary earlier in the year.
Mamdani has been accused of anti-Semitic sentiments due to his outspoken support of Israel and the conflict in Gaza, raising concerns among New York’s Jewish leaders that his potential win could exacerbate anti-Semitic sentiments in the city.
