Former mafia hit man sentenced in murder of Boston crime boss

A former Mafia hitman has been convicted of murdering crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger in prison.

Photios “Freddy” Geas appeared in court Friday after making a deal with prosecutors to change his guilty plea for his role in Bulger's murder.

Geas was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murders. He is already serving a life sentence for his involvement in several other violent crimes, according to the Associated Press.

Bulger, 89, was killed in 2018 after arriving at the U.S. Penitentiary in Hazelton, West Virginia.

An Irish gang boss who held a high-ranking position in Boston's gangland in the 1970s and 1980s is believed to have been targeted on murder charges after he became an FBI informant against a rival gang. The crime boss has always denied cooperating with federal agencies.

Bulger was convicted in 2013 of numerous crimes, including the murders of 11 people, and was serving two life sentences.

Prosecutors allege that Geas bludgeoned Bulger to death with a metal belt lock just hours after the crime boss was transferred to West Virginia from a Florida prison.

Geas has ties to the Genovese family of New York City, but is not an “official member” of the family because he is not of Italian descent.

Another gangster involved in the murder, Paul DeColologiero, pleaded guilty to assault last year and was sentenced to four years in prison, a lighter sentence than the life sentence he was already serving for the attempted murder of a teenage girl.

A third person connected to Bulger's death, Sean McKinnon, pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents after prosecutors alleged he served as a lookout at the time of the murder.

McKinnon had already spent 22 months in prison since his indictment, so no additional time was given to him and he was transferred to Florida so he could continue his probation.

Bulger's family had previously sued the FBI, alleging it was negligent in placing the targeted crime boss in general prison rather than in a more secure location.

The case was ultimately dismissed by a judge in January 2022.
