Former Teacher Sentenced for Sexual Offenses Against Minor
A former sixth-grade teacher from Ohio has recently admitted to committing a sexual offense against a minor. Stefanie Erin Kellenberger, aged 41, pleaded guilty to four counts of third-degree felony sexual assault along with 17 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, as reported in August.
On Monday, Kellenberger received a 15-year prison sentence for her illicit relationships with a minor. There’s a chance she could be released after 10 years, provided she doesn’t commit any further crimes. Judge Brent Robinson emphasized the seriousness of the situation, making it clear, “This is a 15-year prison sentence, hoping you’ll come back in 10 years as a model prisoner.”
As part of her sentencing, Kellenberger will have to register as a Tier 3 sex offender. She is also prohibited from contacting the victims or interacting with other minors, and her teaching license has been permanently revoked.
During the hearing, Kellenberger expressed remorse, saying she was a babysitter for her daughter’s underage friend at the time. She reflected, “I know that during this time you were just a child and I was an adult in a position of trust. We are responsible for everything that has happened between us.” She added, “I am very sorry for all the emotional pain I caused you,” and stated, “I hope my guilty plea and that this sentence will provide some closure as you progress through your life.”
Kellenberger had previously worked as an English teacher at Shelby Middle School. The court revealed that the inappropriate relationship began when the victim was 13, escalating once the girl turned 14. According to the law, the age of consent in Ohio is 16.
Prosecutors highlighted that there was a “use of force” in Kellenberger’s actions. Meanwhile, her defense attorney argued that consent was, in fact, not an issue in the case. Allegations of her sexual misconduct emerged in early 2024, leading to her administrative leave.
Shelby City School Principal Michael Browning notified parents in October 2024 about the serious allegations against Kellenberger. The situation was understandably distressing for families within the school community.
Later that October, Kellenberger resigned, citing “personal reasons.”
