Kighley Medrano’s Journey from Mormonism to Evangelical Christianity

Kighley Medrano was raised in the Mormon church, but after marrying her husband, she transitioned to evangelical Christianity. Now, she shares her experiences of leaving the LDS church and critiques Mormon theology by comparing it to biblical teachings.

During a recent discussion on the show “Relatable,” Kighley expressed her perspective on Mormonism, labeling its foundations as “satanic.” She specifically mentioned the angel Moroni, whom followers believe guided Joseph Smith to the golden plates, asserting that Moroni is, in fact, a demon.

Explaining further, Kighley described a mandatory video shown in the Mormon temple when individuals receive their endowments, which addresses the story of Adam and Eve. At one point, she noted that Satan breaks the fourth wall in this video, instructing viewers to don their “aprons” embellished with “fig leaves.” She argues that Mormons are metaphorically “buried” in these fig-leaf aprons, which she believes undermines the “work of Christ.” Furthermore, she stated that “the only time you’re told to do anything in the temple is from Satan.”

Kighley claimed that Mormonism has “re-erected the temple,” implying that it has reinstated a veil and a “holy of holies,” termed the celestial room, where the spirit of God supposedly resides. She concluded that in this, they have reversed the work of Christ, pointing out that despite the inclusion of the name “Jesus,” the doctrine’s ultimate implications are contrary to his message.

The realization that prompted a significant change in Kighley’s beliefs occurred when she learned how the Bible portrays Satan. While still involved with the Mormon faith, her daughter made friends with another girl whose mother had transitioned from the LDS church to Christianity. One day, as the girls played, the mothers engaged in a meaningful conversation about their differing beliefs.

Kighley recalled asking, “So then what about, ‘By your fruits you will know them’? Generally, the Mormon church produces good, moral families.” The response from her friend was enlightening: “I agree that generally the Mormon church produces good, moral families and children, and it looks really good on the outside, but Satan comes dressed as an angel of light.” At that moment, Kighley was unaware that this phrase was directly from the Bible.

As soon as her friend said that, Kighley recalled the angel Moroni, and it felt as if a light switched on in her mind. She realized the unsettling truth—that the angel Moroni represents something more sinister than she had understood.
