Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews advises Democrats to prioritize the economy

Matthews Critiques Democrats’ Focus

Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews expressed concerns about the Democratic party’s priorities during a discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” He emphasized the need for Democrats to concentrate on economic issues rather than engaging in debates over immigration policy or transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Matthews noted that the Biden administration’s handling of illegal immigration has likely contributed to low approval ratings for the party. He mentioned, “The vote told you an open border — it felt like four years of open borders,” indicating that the situation at the border is affecting the party’s standing.

He continued by saying, “The border has been closed since January today, and it’s not a peek at Hispanic leaders. No one complains because they know that the spike at the border is killing Democrats.”

Calls for Party Unity on Hot Topics

Matthews also brought up issues surrounding transgender policies and how they might impact the upcoming 2024 presidential election. He referred to campaign ads by former President Donald Trump that highlighted the contrast between Trump and his opponents, stating, “Kamara is for them/they, and President Trump is for you.”

According to Matthews, debates about trans participation in sports shouldn’t be the focus for Democrats, suggesting that instead, the party should prioritize three critical economic topics: interest rates, inflation, and tariffs. He posited that this approach could lead to a successful campaign, especially with the next election in 2026 on the horizon.

Discussion on Transgender Policies

Co-host Joe Scarborough supported Matthews’ viewpoint, suggesting that Democrats should broaden their conversation to include humanitarian issues surrounding immigration. He pointed out that there is significant public opposition to men who transition competing in women’s sports.

Scarborough stressed the importance of framing these discussions around affordability and the consequences of current policy decisions.

Earlier this month, Matthews had urged Democrats to address Trump’s crime reduction strategy in urban areas like Washington, D.C. He remarked, “I think this is a strength move against big cities in a difficult situation with crime. You can’t keep saying that violent crime is falling with the rate of murder. Murder is about life and death; you don’t brag about the rise in murder rates.”
