Chris Matthews on Trump’s Strength Despite Low Approval Ratings
Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews asserts that President Trump still holds an advantage over many Americans, even with his declining approval ratings.
Matthews responded to recent polls from Gallup and CNN, which indicated Trump’s approval ratings at 37% and 41%, respectively. These numbers came after his historically low ratings following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.
“Honestly, I feel like the country is coming around to Trump,” Matthews mentioned during an interview with journalist Charlie Rose. “These polls suggesting he’s struggling? I’m skeptical.”
He emphasized, “He still has more power than the Democrats. He holds a stronger presence than any Democratic figures.” Matthews compared Trump to former President Barack Obama, noting Obama’s charisma but emphasizing Trump’s perceived strength. “Voters want a strong leader, and he fits that bill. There’s no denying that, and a good chunk of the country agrees.”
While Matthews expresses confidence in Trump’s appeal, polls indicate a drop in overall support for the president six months into his second term.
Recent figures from the Associated Press Center in July placed Trump’s approval at just 40%. Nonetheless, he retains a solid backing among Republican voters, with CNN reporting 88% support within the party. Quinnipiac’s figures suggest this number could be as high as 90%, showing a slight uptick from earlier surveys.
Trump has commented on these polls, claiming they reflect positively on his standing in light of ongoing controversies surrounding his administration, particularly concerning the late Jeffrey Epstein. He stated, “My numbers are climbing within the GOP as the radical left tries to create chaos around Epstein’s situation.”
Matthews isn’t alone in his surprising endorsement of Trump among some left-leaning commentators since departing MSNBC in 2020. Earlier this year, he praised Trump for taking action against Harvard regarding allegations of rising anti-Semitism, calling the administration’s approach “smart.”
