Marshawn Lynch Reflects on Buffalo Bills Coaching Issues
Former NFL player Marshawn Lynch has shared his thoughts on some of the challenges within the Buffalo Bills’ coaching staff during his time with the team. Lynch, who was drafted in the first round by Buffalo in 2007, played with the Bills for over three seasons before moving to the Seattle Seahawks in 2010. His primary coach during that time was Dick Jauron.
Jauron was let go after a disappointing nine-game stretch in 2009, and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell took over as interim coach. The Bills ended that season with a record of 6 wins and 10 losses.
In a recent appearance on “Club Random with Bill Maher,” Lynch spoke candidly about a perceived tension between Jauron and Fewell, suggesting there was more going on behind the scenes than met the eye. “When I was in Buffalo, it felt like you were watching coaches backdooring other coaches,” Lynch remarked. He indicated that Jauron seemed more approachable as a players’ coach, while Fewell, who stepped in after Jauron’s departure, had a much different vibe. Lynch seemed to imply that this created an unhealthy atmosphere within the organization.
He said, “When you have people who have no love for everyone in the organization, you can’t be successful.” Lynch’s comments illustrate the complexities of team dynamics and how those relationships impact overall performance.
Lynch also drew a comparison to his experience with the Oakland Raiders, reflecting on how he felt a more positive relationship with the franchise’s owner, Mark Davis, which obviously enriched his experience during that period.
Following his time with the Bills, Fewell moved on to the New York Giants, where he became defensive coordinator and contributed to a Super Bowl victory in 2011. He also held the role of interim head coach for the Carolina Panthers in 2019. Currently, he is the NFL’s senior vice president of communications and administration.
Tragically, Jauron passed away in February of the previous year. His last coaching role was in Buffalo, although he remained involved in the NFL through the 2012 season with stints at the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns.
