Former NYC councilmember criticizes Mamdani, claims mayoral race isn't finished yet

New York City’s Mayoral Race: Mamdani Faces Challenges

Zohran Mamdani, the former leader of the New York City Council, recently lost his bid for mayor, with frontrunner candidates emphasizing that many of his proposals simply can’t be fulfilled. Joe Borelli, a councillor for over nine years, weighed in on the ongoing race, discussing contenders like Eric Adams, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa taking on Mamdani’s openly socialist platform.

Borelli mentioned to Fox, “The race never really ends. The first voting will be around September 10th, after Labor Day.” He also speculated about possible political alliances as the election approaches.

In a significant loss for the Democratic Party, Cuomo was upset by Mamdani back in June. Borelli noted that there’s potential for President Trump to rally New York City’s GOP voters in favor of former governors.

Borelli pointed out that although Trump’s support could prompt other candidates to withdraw, it might not be as beneficial as one might think. “Trump could help Cuomo by getting Sliwa and Adams to exit the race,” he remarked. “But even supporters have to admit—Trump isn’t exactly the most popular figure among New Yorkers.”

Regarding Mamdani, he has sidestepped questions linking him to communism, instead framing his campaign around concepts of wealth distribution. His promises include free childcare, free bus transport, city-owned grocery stores, and rent freezes. But Borelli, with his experience, believes these commitments are, quite frankly, unrealistic.

“Mamdani can’t accomplish much of what he says he will,” Borelli commented. He specifically mentioned the MTA’s financial struggles, implying that making public transportation free would be incredibly costly and complicated.

Mamdani’s proposals for city-run grocery stores have also met resistance. New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her preference for free enterprise over Mamdani’s approach during an event in the Hamptons.

The upcoming mayoral election in November is shaping up to be quite eventful, especially with Mamdani currently leading among candidates. Attempts to reach out to his campaign for comments went unanswered.
