Former New Jersey school aide faces 61 child sex crime charges

A former pre-kindergarten teacher’s aide in New Jersey is facing 61 criminal charges after investigators found what prosecutors described as disturbing evidence. He had previously been accused of sexually abusing four siblings over more than a decade at his home.

Shaun M. Stebbins, 44, of Somers Point, is charged with 29 counts of first-degree manufacturing child sexual abuse material, 14 counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, 13 counts of second-degree sexual assault by sexual contact, and five counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Stebbins worked as a teacher’s aide at Woodbine Elementary School from February 2022 until his arrest in Atlantic County on March 29, 2026.

The investigation widened after authorities were alerted to allegations of sexual assaults in Atlantic County and possible offenses in Cape May County. Prosecutors said an alleged victim, now an adult, came forward with claims against Stebbins, prompting investigators to look into possible crimes at the school.

“The search of Shaun Stebbins’ devices revealed numerous images and videos of students from the Woodbine Elementary School in Cape May County,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The allegations that led to Stebbins’ arrest date back to 2012. Prosecutors allege he committed sexual acts involving multiple children under 13 through 2025.

Court documents also allege that Stebbins photographed and recorded children’s genitalia in school restrooms, and recorded himself sexually abusing children in a restroom during nap time. Prosecutors have identified alleged victims as young as 3 and 4.

Under New Jersey law, a first-degree conviction can carry a prison term of 10 to 20 years. A second-degree conviction typically carries a sentence of five to 10 years.

Stebbins is being held at the Atlantic County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland said authorities have a responsibility to protect children and that people who harm them will be held accountable through the justice system.

Anyone with information about the case can contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit at 609-465-1135. The Woodbine School District had not immediately responded to a request for comment.
