A former official from the Reagan administration is raising concerns about what he perceives as a growing “red-green alliance” between radical Islamists and leftist socialists. He argues that these ideologically distinct groups are collaborating on an anti-American agenda. Frank Gaffney, in a conversation with Fox News Digital, expressed his views regarding the rising impact of the Democratic Socialists of America and the potential threats they pose to U.S. national security.
“You could say that Sharia supremacists are seeking a type of communism, perhaps with a religious layer,” Gaffney noted. “At their core, they are both rooted in totalitarianism. While they might envision different outcomes, they seem ready to unite to achieve their shared goal of undermining the United States, which hinders their aspirations.”
Gaffney, who served as assistant secretary of defense for international security policy during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, argues that there’s a visible “red-green axis” that aims to dismantle the country, and he sees this occurring within the Democratic Party today.
This “red-green alliance,” which characterizes the political collaboration between leftist movements (symbolized by red) and Islamist movements (represented by green), is a concept that Gaffney believes is gaining traction. He suggests that despite differing ultimate goals, both factions see American constitutionalism as a common adversary.
Recently, the dynamics of this alliance were discussed at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing centered on the Muslim Brotherhood’s influence in the U.S. During the hearing, Senator Ted Cruz brought attention to the connections between groups like the Democratic Socialists of America and the Muslim Brotherhood, which he has labeled the “Red-Green Alliance.”
Shideler, a director and senior analyst at the Center for Security Policy, supported Cruz’s observations, stating that he has encountered evidence suggesting that this alliance shares a desire to undermine American values, including the Constitution.
Gaffney reiterated this viewpoint, indicating a willingness from both movements to collaborate on what he identifies as a critical objective: to dismantle the United States as it currently exists.
Moreover, some critics from within the Muslim community have highlighted the dangerous intersection between radical Islamism and the left. For instance, Dalia Ziada, a Muslim scholar who left Egypt following her criticism of Hamas, noted the “sinful marriage” between these two ideologies and emphasized that it threatens not just U.S. politics, but Western society as a whole.
Investigation into this alliance has revealed a significant number of organizations, estimated at around 425, which span communists, Muslim advocacy, and anti-Israel groups. Collectively, they participate in a global protest network that generates approximately $1 billion in revenue annually.
