Former Secret Service director tried to deep-six investigation into cocaine found at White House: Report

Secret Service leaders, including then-Director Kimberly Cheatle, tried to quash an investigation into bags of cocaine found at the White House in July 2023, according to another explosive report about the federal agency by Susan Crabtree. Real Clear Politics.

On July 2, 2023, after the Biden family departed for Camp David for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, uniformed Secret Service officers conducting a routine inspection of the White House discovered a bag filled with a white powder that was later identified as cocaine.

Matt White allegedly received a phone call from Cheatle or someone claiming to be her agent ordering him to destroy the cocaine evidence in order to close the case.

After Hunter Biden, whose son is known to have abused illegal drugs including crack and cocaine, and who had recently visited the White House, reporters immediately began asking whether the bag belonged to Biden — a line of questioning that was later called “irresponsible.”

Republican lawmakers also wrote to Cheatle demanding more details about the security breaches that likely allowed the bags of cocaine to get into the White House in the first place.

As previously reported by The Blaze News, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer wrote to Cheatle five days after the bag was discovered, saying “the presence of illegal drugs in the White House is unacceptable and a shameful episode in White House history.”

DNA was eventually extracted from the bag and investigators found a “partial” match, but the investigation “did not uncover any investigative surveillance footage,” no fingerprints were found, and there was “insufficient DNA,” so the Secret Service’s investigation into the case was ultimately “closed due to lack of physical evidence,” one agent said. statement From the agency.

Now, more than a year later, the Secret Service is once again under intense scrutiny after a series of deadly security lapses that led to 20-year-old Thomas Crooks firing several shots at former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024.

One bullet penetrated President Trump’s ear and grazed his head by less than an inch, while others killed former Fire Chief Corey Comperatore and seriously wounded two others.

Cheatle, who initially resisted calls for her resignation after the shooting, eventually resigned and Ronald Rowe replaced her as acting director.

Crabtree said at least one uniformed Secret Service officer told Cheatle, Rowe and other officers last year that they intended to follow crime scene procedures regarding the bags of cocaine found at the White House. The officer was apparently transferred off the case shortly after that conversation.

Additionally, Matt White, who at the time oversaw the vault where the cocaine evidence was being stored, received a call from Cheatle or someone claiming to be her representative ordering him to destroy the cocaine evidence in order to close the case, Crabtree reported, citing two Secret Service sources.

Despite apparent pressure from Cheatle, the Secret Service’s forensic science division stood firm and denied requests to destroy the cocaine evidence, Crabtree claimed.

“The decision was made not to dispose of the evidence and it made Mr Cheatle really angry,” a source told RCP.

“That’s because they didn’t want to know who they were and didn’t want to narrow down the possibilities,” the source told RCP. “It could be Hunter Biden, it could be a staff member, it could be someone on the tour. We’ll never know.”

Additionally, Crabtree suggested that former Secret Service acting chief of the Uniformed Division, Richard McCauley, may have missed out on a permanent position because he supported people who refused to destroy cocaine evidence.

Cheatle has been close with the Biden family, particularly First Lady Jill Biden, dating back to Joe Biden’s time as vice president during the Obama administration, and his close ties to the family have reportedly led Biden to nominate Cheatle to be Secret Service director in 2022.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi did not immediately respond to RCP’s request for comment.
