Former South Carolina Court Clerk Pleads Guilty in Murdaugh Case

On Monday, a former court clerk from South Carolina, Mary Rebecca “Becky” Hill, entered a guilty plea regarding her conduct during the high-profile murder trial of Alex Murdaugh. She admitted to showing sealed court documents to a photographer and subsequently providing false testimony in court.

Hill, previously employed as a court clerk in Colleton County, faced four charges in total. These included obstruction of official business and perjury for disclosing a photo that was part of a sealed exhibit to a reporter, as well as two counts of misconduct in public office for accepting a bonus and using her position to promote a book about the trial.

During her court statement, Hill expressed deep remorse, saying, “There’s really no excuse for what I did. I’m ashamed of that mistake, and it’s something I will regret for the rest of my life.” The judge sentenced her to three years of probation.

Judge Heath Taylor noted that Hill’s punishment could have been much stricter if investigators had uncovered more evidence of her interference in the murder trial. Throughout the trial, she had responsibilities like supervising the jury and handling exhibits, which became crucial in Murdaugh’s case, where he was found guilty of murdering his wife and son after a lengthy six-week trial that garnered widespread media attention.

Defense attorneys for Murdaugh alleged that Hill sought to sway the jury’s decision and claimed that any bias against him stemmed from her book. Reports indicate that a journalist alerted authorities about Hill’s revealing graphic crime scene photos to various media members, although the journalist’s identity was kept confidential.

Hill’s presence in a restricted area at the courthouse was corroborated by metadata from the posted photo, aligning with the timestamps from her keycard access.

In March 2024, Hill resigned. One of the charges involved funds she improperly handled, and during the court proceedings, she brought a check to repay nearly $10,000. Meanwhile, Murdaugh himself is currently serving a prison sentence for embezzling funds from both his law firm and a client’s residence.
