Derek Dooley Runs for Senate in Georgia
Once again, Republicans linked to the University of Georgia football scene are stepping into the political arena in Georgia. Derek Dooley, the son of the esteemed Bulldogs manager Vince Dooley, declared on Monday his intention to challenge Senator John Ossoff in the upcoming GOP race.
At 57, Dooley positions himself as a genuine outsider, emphasizing that he aims to prioritize “Georgia first.” He expressed his belief that true leadership is crucial, criticizing Ossoff for focusing on his political ambitions rather than reflecting Georgia’s values.
“Leadership is important,” Dooley said. “Our state lacks a voice in the Senate that truly embodies what Georgians stand for, especially since Ossoff seems more interested in his own future and opposes many of the initiatives that the Trump administration has pushed.”
He also shared a perspective on football, stating, “The foundation of football mirrors the American spirit. You put in the hard work, play fair, and keep fighting through challenges. That’s how dreams are realized, and I want that for all Georgians and Americans.” It’s a sentiment that resonates, doesn’t it?
There’s talk that Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp may have given a nod of approval for Dooley’s campaign.
Vince Dooley, who passed away in 2022, notably led the Bulldogs to a national championship in 1980 and had previously endorsed Donald Trump during the 2016 election.
While Derek has followed in his father’s footsteps in coaching, his record has been mixed. After a three-season stint at Louisiana Tech, he moved to the University of Tennessee but faced challenges, failing to secure a winning season and getting dismissed in 2012. Recently, he worked as a senior analyst under Nick Saban at the University of Alabama.
As for Senator Ossoff, he’s recognized for his strong speaking skills. Analysts see his seat as a prime target for the GOP in the 2026 elections.
The Republicans are keenly interested in Ossoff’s position, especially after Herschel Walker, a former Bulldog, lost to Senator Rafael Warnock (D-Ga.) in 2022. This interest has led many GOP operatives to seek out solid candidates.
Dooley is currently up against a competitive field that includes representatives like Mike Collins and Buddy Carter, along with horse trainer Reaganbox.
Heading into the 2026 election, Republicans are tasked with defending 22 out of 35 Senate seats, while Democrats need to protect just 13. It’s going to be an intriguing race.
