Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro, hours after release from prison, appears at RNC: ‘I am your wake-up call’

Former Advisor to Donald Trump Peter Navarro Taking the stage on the third day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Trump was greeted by a cheering crowd of Republican supporters and declared that Democrats “will never beat Trump.”

Navarro, who took to the stage to chants of “Fight, fight, fight,” was released from a Miami jail on Wednesday, just hours before speaking at the convention.

“That’s right. This morning I got out of a federal prison in Miami. Joe Biden and his department of corruption put me there. Tonight I stand with you all in this beautiful city of Milwaukee and I have a very simple message for you all: if they can get at me, if they can get at Donald Trump, watch out. They’ll get at you all,” Trump told the crowd.

Navarro, 75, was found guilty of contempt of Congress and sentenced in March to four months in a federal prison in Miami.

Peter Navarro, former director of the Office of U.S. Trade and Manufacturing Policy, speaks onstage during the third day of the Republican National Convention at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 17, 2024.

In his convention speech, Navarro called for support for Trump and warned that “their government” would “rule us over” if Trump did not retake the White House this fall.

“If we don’t control our government, their government will control us. If we don’t control all three branches of government – legislative, executive and judicial – their government will put some of us in jail, like me and Steve Bannon,” he said.

Navarro reflected on the differences between President Trump and President Biden, saying that for voters taking part in the November election, we now have a “tale of two Americas.”

“This is a tale of two Americas. You know this wasn’t like this when Donald Trump was president. I remember those times. I was there. In Trump’s America, people were safe, the borders were secure. In Trump’s America, people were better off, they didn’t have to choose between food on the table, medicine in their cupboard and a roof over their head. And in Trump’s America, they didn’t have to worry about being jailed for opposing their government,” Navarro told Republicans.

“I went to prison so you don’t have to go to prison. I’m your wake-up call,” he added.

Navarro also explained how he ended up in prison after calling on Democrats to “betray” Trump to avoid going to prison.

“Here’s how I got into prison: First the legislature got me. Your favorite Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, created your favorite committee, the phony January 6th Committee, and demanded that I violate executive privilege. What did I do? I refused,” he said.

” [Jan. 6] “The House committee demanded that I betray Donald John Trump to protect myself. I refused,” he added. “They have no respect for the law, so they asked me to break the law. I refused, and the House Democratic majority voted to indict me for contempt of Congress. … Jack Smith indicted me for contempt of Congress. What’s odd here is that Democratic prosecutors refuse to do so against their own associates, including two men with their blood on their hands, Eric Holder and Alejandro Mayorkas.”

Navarro, who served as President Trump’s trade adviser, is the second Trump aide to be convicted of contempt of Congress. White House Adviser Steve Bannon had already served a four-month prison sentence but was released pending appeal by U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee.

“They convicted me and put me in jail, but guess what? They didn’t destroy me.” And they’re never going to beat Donald Trump,” Navarro said Wednesday.

Navarro said he could not cooperate with the committee investigating the January 6 attack. Because it’s Trump The president asserted executive privilege, but a lower court rejected that claim.

“When I received the second subpoena from Congress, I honestly believed privilege was being invoked and it troubled me. Someone in my position should not be put in a position where they’re at odds with the legislative and executive branches. Is that the moral of this whole process? Call the letters and the lawyers? To some extent, I think it is,” Navarro said in January.

“I am disappointed in the process that a jury found me guilty but denied me one of the most important elements of our justice system – the opportunity to defend myself,” he said.
