Former TV Anchor Charged with Murder of Mother

A former television anchor faces first-degree murder charges after allegedly stabbing her 80-year-old mother, claiming it was an act of self-defense, on Halloween. This was revealed by authorities last week.

Angeline Mock, who previously worked at a local Fox affiliate, is accused of repeatedly stabbing her mother, Anita Avars, in their home in Kansas during the early hours of October 31st.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office has charged Mock, 47, with first-degree murder, which carries the possibility of a life sentence.

Mock, known for her role as an anchor at KTVI Fox 2 in St. Louis in the early 2010s, was taken into custody at around 7:50 a.m. after she reportedly called the police herself.

When police arrived, they found her outside the home with cuts on her hands.

Mock allegedly stated, “I stabbed my mother to save myself,” according to the Sedgwick dispatcher.

Officers discovered Avars unresponsive in bed, having suffered multiple stab wounds. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries about 30 minutes later.

Mock also received treatment for her injuries at the hospital and has since been booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Neighbors expressed shock upon witnessing Mock emerge from the house covered in blood on Halloween morning. One neighbor, Alyssa Castro, recalled, “A woman came up to our car with blood all over her hands and body asking us to call 911.”

Castro and her boyfriend gave Mock their cellphone, allowing her to call for help. “We never know who is going through what,” she reflected on the situation. “This happened by chance, but I’m just glad we could get to 911 in time.”

Avars was a respected family and marriage therapist with Wichita Counseling Professionals, bringing 18 years of experience in supporting adults with mental health issues like depression and anxiety disorders, as detailed on the clinic’s website.

Mock’s preliminary hearing is set for November 14.
