Former UK spy chief says Trump reelection is national security threat

The former head of Britain's spy agency has said former President Donald Trump's possible second term is a national security threat to the country.

Sir Richard Dearlove, former head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, said: Sky News interview On Sunday, he said Trump's re-election would be “problematic” for Britain because of former president Trump's troubles with NATO.

Trump has attacked the alliance throughout his time in the White House and reportedly proposed withdrawing from NATO during his term. President Trump has repeatedly criticized other governments for not contributing enough to NATO.

Asked what the biggest threats to Britain's national security are, Dearlove cited the Russia-Ukraine war, China's potential threat to Western interests and Taiwan, and the possibility of Trump's re-election in the United States.

“I think it's important, but I'm not a politician. You have to add a political threat. What I'm concerned about is Trump's re-election. I think this is a problem for British national security. ” Dearlove said. “Because if Trump were to act rashly and damage the transatlantic alliance, that would be a big deal for the UK.”

“We have put all our eggs in the NATO basket from a defense perspective. If President Trump is really serious about changing the balance, so to speak, then we have to put all our eggs in the NATO basket, so to speak, which means the US nuclear umbrella over Europe. is, in my view, essential for the security and defense of Europe,” he added.

Britain's secret intelligence agency is commonly known as MI6, where Dearlove worked for nearly 40 years. He served as Director General of the Agency from his 1999 until his 2004.

Other critics have expressed concern that Trump's re-election could affect NATO's status.

Former Trump administration national security adviser John Bolton warned last year that the United States would “almost certainly leave NATO” during Trump's second term.
