Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has died, according to his family, who shared the news on Tuesday. He was 84 years old.
Cheney served as the 46th Vice President from 2001 to 2009 alongside Republican President George W. Bush.
In addition to his vice presidential role, Cheney was Secretary of Defense under Republican President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1993.
Earlier in his career, Cheney worked as White House Chief of Staff for Gerald Ford during the 1970s and was a member of the House of Representatives for a decade.

Cheney died due to complications from pneumonia and cardiovascular disease.
He dedicated decades to public service, holding prominent roles as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President.
Remembered as a great man, he instilled in his children and grandchildren values of love for their country, courage, honor, kindness, and a passion for fly fishing.

Cheney represented Wyoming’s major congressional district from 1979 to 1989 and served as the 17th Secretary of Defense during George H.W. Bush’s presidency.
Reports indicate that Cheney struggled with cardiovascular issues throughout much of his life, having survived multiple heart attacks.
Despite these challenges, he maintained an active lifestyle. After receiving a heart transplant in 2012, he enjoyed many years of retirement, referring to this new lease on life as “the gift of life itself.”
Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was the son of a Department of Agriculture employee. Cheney was president of his senior class and co-captain of the football team in Casper. He briefly attended Yale University on a full scholarship but left due to academic difficulties.
Returning to Wyoming, he enrolled at the University of Wyoming and rekindled his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Lynne, whom he married in 1964.
