Investigation Underway After Death of Dutch Referee

An inquiry has been initiated following the death of Dutch soccer referee Rob Diepelink. He was arrested in England on suspicions of sexually assaulting a young boy and was subsequently removed from officiating at the World Cup.

The Dutch Football Association expressed its shock and sorrow over Diepelink’s passing.

At 38 years old, Diepelink had been slated to officiate at this year’s World Cup but was taken off the roster after his arrest. This incident occurred while he was officiating a UEFA Conference League match between Crystal Palace and Fiorentina in April.

It was reported that he allegedly groped a teenage boy and attempted to coax him into a hotel room. Although he was arrested in front of other UEFA officials, the charges against him were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police indicated that a comprehensive investigation had been conducted, stating, “As a result of these inquiries, we have concluded that the evidentiary standard has not been met. No further action will be taken.”

Despite the legal resolution, FIFA decided to remove him from the list of referees. Diepelink responded at the time, expressing his disappointment over the false accusations and his removal from the World Cup.

The Dutch Football Association released a statement saying, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the death of referee Rob Diepelinck. With his passing, the refereeing community has lost an invaluable official with international experience and, more importantly, a tremendous and devoted colleague. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who cared for him during this difficult time.”

Although Dutch football authorities had indicated that Diepelink could return to refereeing following the dismissal of the charges, it was also noted that the experience had a significant emotional impact on him.
