Influencers online weren’t exactly thrilled with the chaotic travel situations some Spirit Airlines and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport passengers faced between March 15 and March 16, 2026.
Many took to TikTok to vent their frustrations over the ordeal they encountered.
A combination of a partial government shutdown, severe weather, staffing shortages, the busy spring break travel season, and Spirit Airlines’ ongoing bankruptcy led to numerous flight cancellations and delays, especially in Florida.
A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines responded to inquiries, noting, “Several factors have affected our operations recently, including severe weather and air traffic control restrictions that have impacted crew availability.” They added that restrictions were particularly pronounced in Florida, where most of their flights operate.
A bride shared her dismay on TikTok. “How dare you ruin the end of a perfect honeymoon week, Mr. Spirit,” she lamented, providing footage of long lines at the airport. “If you’re flying out of FLL on Spirit, please stay home. We’ve been here nearly 12 hours, and it’s 4 AM now.”
Reactions from her followers were mixed. While some defended Spirit, pointing to the weather and the government shutdown, others suggested the airline couldn’t escape responsibility. “Look at the departure board,” one user commented. “All airlines have delayed or canceled due to weather and overworked traffic control.”
Another traveler recounted, “My flight from Las Vegas was delayed because the pilot wasn’t available. People don’t consider that. Plus, the government is partially closed, and the weather on the East Coast has been terrible.”
One user expressed their frustration: “I’ve been stuck here for three days, trying to get home. I was supposed to leave Friday night. Now it’s Monday, and I just want to go home.”
Another TikTok video captured a crowd at the airport, with the poster exclaiming, “I’ll never fly from Fort Lauderdale again and never choose Spirit.” A video clip showcased travelers resting on the airport floor.
The frustration continued with one user stating, “My flight got canceled twice! I was supposed to leave last night and now I have to switch to United from West Palm or be stuck until Thursday!”
A Spirit spokesperson assured customers, “We understand how frustrating sudden changes can be and we apologize for the inconvenience.” They added that they were reaching out to those impacted to inform them of their options, including rescheduling or getting a refund.
Recently, Spirit Airlines’ parent company announced it would be scaling back its fleet to about a third of its size before the bankruptcy. This followed a move to reduce its number of aircraft significantly after entering Chapter 11 protection last August with 214 planes.
The low-cost carrier is in the midst of a significant restructuring, aiming to lower costs and stabilize financially after facing bankruptcy twice in just one year.
In a recent statement, Spirit reiterated its awareness of the challenges faced by passengers: “We understand how frustrating it can be when plans change unexpectedly.” They are also looking to reduce their fleet further in the latter part of 2026.
