Escape from Newark Immigration Detention Center

Authorities are currently on the lookout following the escape of at least four detainees from the Delaney Hall ICE Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday. This incident arose amidst ongoing disturbances within the facility.

A senior official from homeland security, who chose to remain anonymous, mentioned that about 50 detainees expressed frustration over delayed meal services, which led to some damaging a wall in the dormitory allowing for several escapes.

“Additional law enforcement agencies have been enlisted to track down those who escaped, and this situation is garnering attention,” the official noted.

“The scuffle was primarily about food, and tensions among some of the detainees escalated into aggression,” shared immigration attorney Mustafa Setin.

Setin is representing one of the individuals in the facility and provided insights regarding the incident.

“From what he described, it appeared to be an outer wall that wasn’t particularly sturdy—easily pushed down,” Setin recounted.

He also suggested that some detainees might have fashioned ropes from bed sheets to facilitate their descent from the dormitory.

In response to the situation, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who himself faced detention earlier in May, planned a “surveillance visit” amid demands from various left-leaning groups.

Baraka’s legal representative commented, “He had trespassed and removed himself from the ICE facility, disregarding multiple warnings from Homeland Security.”

Recently, the mayor has emphasized the need for improved oversight of the detention center.

“The entire scenario suffers from insufficient monitoring regarding fundamental aspects like local zoning regulations and basic constitutional rights. This is why private prisons must allow observation,” Baraka stated.

“We are demanding prompt responses and clear lines of communication with the GEO Group and the Department of Homeland Security. It’s vital this operation undergoes proper scrutiny,” he added.

The situation escalated further when Representative Ramonica McQuiver (D-N.J.) faced federal charges related to obstructing law enforcement officials during a visit to the facility.

On Thursday evening, a group of protesters gathered outside the detention center, where an SUV momentarily obstructed its exit before being moved back inside.

Concerning the ongoing manhunt, a senior official from Homeland Security remarked:
