Late Friday night, four individuals, suspected to be illegal immigrants, drowned when a smuggling boat capsized in rough waters near Imperial Beach, California. The U.S. Coast Guard managed to recover one body and rescued several others after responding to the incident involving a “panga” boat near Seacoast Drive. A multi-agency search and rescue effort ensued, with four survivors taken to the hospital and one placed in Border Patrol custody.
The situation unfolded around midnight Friday when Border Patrol agents in Imperial Beach, located just south of downtown San Diego, alerted the Coast Guard about the capsized boat. They reported that six individuals were found on the beach, with one confirmed dead by emergency medical services, while another was discovered trapped under the overturned boat and subsequently rescued.
Following calls from community members who observed people in the water near Imperial Beach Pier, a Coast Guard boat crew arrived and pulled three bodies from the sea. Emergency personnel stated that these three individuals, also believed to be illegal immigrants, were deceased upon arrival.
A large-scale search and rescue operation commenced to locate any additional victims, involving several Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, alongside lifeguards from Imperial Beach and San Diego. Support was also provided by deputies from the San Diego and Chula Vista Fire Departments, the Imperial Beach Border Patrol, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
This happened shortly after another maritime incident off the San Diego coast, where Coast Guard personnel apprehended 12 suspected illegal immigrants on a similar “panga” boat. In that case, the pilots of the vessel did not comply when approached by the Coast Guard and attempted to escape. The Coast Guard crew pursued them and fired shots to disable the engine, effectively stopping the smuggling attempt.
No injuries were reported from that incident, according to the Coast Guard. Eleven individuals, believed to be illegal immigrants, claimed to be from Mexico, while one identified as a citizen of El Salvador.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Investigations division is currently looking into the matter.
