Air Force Tanker Tragedy in Iraq

The Army Department confirmed on Thursday that an Air Force refueling tanker sank over Iraq, resulting in the deaths of four crew members.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement on Friday indicating that a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker carrying six military personnel crashed in western Iraq. While the circumstances are still under investigation, two additional military personnel are still unaccounted for. Notably, another aircraft involved in the incident landed safely.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with CENTCOM sharing that the crash occurred around 2:00 p.m. ET on March 12. Out of the six individuals on board, four have been confirmed as deceased.

According to the statement, “The loss of the aircraft was not the result of hostile fire or friendly fire.” The Department of the Army did not respond to inquiries for further comments.

This tragic incident occurred amid ongoing tensions; earlier, six U.S. service members lost their lives in an Iranian strike on an operations center in Kuwait, while another seven died due to injuries from an Iranian attack on a military base in Saudi Arabia. There was also a separate death attributed to a medical emergency.

The KC-135 aircraft has been part of the U.S. Air Force since 1956, and is designed to refuel other aircraft in flight. Typically, it operates with a crew of three, including a pilot, co-pilot, and boom operator. The Pentagon did not provide details regarding the additional crew members on this flight.

In the backdrop of these events, President Trump is under significant scrutiny related to his military strategies against Iran, including a bombing that tragically impacted an elementary school and resulted in numerous civilian casualties. While he has promised that the conflict “will end soon,” specifics about when that might happen remain unclear.
