Four teenagers were arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting that resulted in the death of a Tennessee high school student following a football game in late August.
The arrests were made exactly six weeks after 16-year-old Cameron Frierson was shot dead in front of his younger brother, Chris, after they attended a game at Pearl-Cohn High School in Nashville on August 21, according to local police.
Jon’quavous Johns-Collins, 18, Marcelle Stem Jr., 17, Lil Tay Webster, 17, and Zachkeius Brown, 16, are facing charges of criminal homicide and conspiracy, as announced by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department on Friday.
In court on Friday, Cameron’s mother, Brittany Frierson, confronted one of the alleged shooters and warned all four suspects that they would “see my face at every court hearing.”
“I don’t care how long it takes. I’m going to be here every day,” the grieving mother told local news.
The four suspects were reportedly inside a vehicle from which multiple shots were fired at around 10:30 p.m. on the night of the incident, police stated.
Cameron, a junior at Hunters Lane High School, was found with several gunshot wounds by first responders and was transported to Vanderbilt University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Fortunately, his younger brother remained unharmed in the attack.
Authorities are still looking into the motive behind the shooting.
Witnesses described the shooters as being in a white sedan with tinted windows. All suspects are minors and were charged in juvenile court, according to the police department.
The court hearing was a painful moment for Brittany Frierson, but she expressed gratitude for the pursuit of justice for her son, stating that he “didn’t deserve this.”
“He was mine, and you didn’t have a right to take him from me,” she added.
Brittany mentioned that while she feels for the circumstances the accused may have faced growing up, it does not justify their actions against her son.
“I have a lot of empathy for them because I know what type of background they came from. But that doesn’t give them the right to hurt somebody else,” she remarked.
She insisted, “My son did nothing to them,” and believed that if it hadn’t been Cameron, it could have been someone else, as the shooters had intentions to harm that night.
Brittany urged that “we have to do better with our kids” because “those kids were obviously hurting bad enough where they felt the need to go out and hurt someone else.”
“It starts at home,” she emphasized.
