On their website, MCRI states, “Murdoch Children’s research improves the lives of millions of children every year. With your support, we can accelerate breakthroughs that give every child the chance to live a healthy and fulfilling life.”
New Initiatives Announced
At a recent charity dinner by the American-Australian Society, MCRI highlighted its commitment to improving the lives of children and youth worldwide. The focus includes better diagnosis, early intervention, and innovative treatments for patients.
Founded in 1986 by philanthropist Dame Elizabeth Murdoch and genetics pioneer Professor David Danks, MCRI has grown from its origins as the Murdoch Birth Defects Research Institute into a prestigious entity in child health research.
In 2024, Sarah Murdoch, wife of FOX Corporation Executive Chairman and CEO Lachlan Murdoch, announced a collaborative effort between Australian and U.S. researchers. This partnership aims to strengthen relationships, leading to accelerated discoveries between teams at MCRI in Melbourne and the Gladstone Institute in San Francisco.
A key initiative, the “Decoding Broken Hearts” program, addresses the root causes of congenital heart disease by integrating advanced stem cell technology from MCRI with AI capabilities from Gladstone. This innovative approach aims to curb the progression of pediatric heart disease.
