Schumer intervenes

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D.N.Y.) has had a very strong reaction to his comments about Israel. In a floor speech Thursday, the Senate majority leader called on Israel to elect a new prime minister and move forward with a two-state solution for Israel and Gaza. Schumer said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is one of four obstacles to lasting peace.

Republicans quickly demanded an apology from him for his comments. The top four Republicans held an impromptu press conference shortly after Schumer’s remarks during their annual training camp at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. “We had a work session here within the last 30 minutes, so there was a buzz among the audience as people saw the notifications coming to their phones which was quite shocking to us.” Chairman Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Johnson suggested the House of Commons might move forward with a standalone aid package for Israel given the “urgency” following Schumer’s comments.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Senate, said Israel deserves “an ally who acts like an ally.”

McConnell added: “It is grotesque and hypocritical for Americans hyperventilating about foreign interference in our democracy to call for the removal of Israel’s democratically elected leaders.”

Schumer is calling for Israel to hold new elections. Schumer said he believes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has “lost his way” amid Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and the growing humanitarian crisis there.
