Fox News Poll: Voters oppose student protests, say they haven’t made them more sympathetic to the Palestinians

Graduation ceremonies have been canceled due to numerous protests on university campuses against the war in Gaza, but have views on the war changed? Perhaps what the students want is different.

According to the latest Fox News poll released Wednesday, twice as many registered voters say the protests have made them feel less sympathetic toward Palestinians (29%) than they say they have become more sympathetic (16%). More than half of them answered that they were not sympathetic. Made a difference (52%).

In general, a third support the protests (33%) and six in 10 oppose them (59%).

Liberals (56%), Black voters (54%), voters under 30 (54%), and Democrats (50%) are among those most likely to support protests. Each group recorded support of over 50%.

Republicans (80%), those who consider themselves very conservative (77%), white evangelical Christians (74%) and rural whites (72%) are even more opposed to the protests. , at least 7 out of 10 people said so.

Democrats, black voters, liberals, and voters under 35 are more likely to say the protests have increased, rather than decreased, their sympathy for Palestinians by 7 to 10 points, but most, including those groups Of the groups, more than half said they were affected by the protests. Opinions differ on what the protests mean. About 6 in 10 voters say they are pro-Palestinian (62%) or anti-Israel (58%). All other descriptions of the protests are less than 50%, including anti-war (49%), anti-Semitism (46%), anti-American (43%), and pro-Hamas (42%).

Majorities of Democrats and Republicans agree that the protests can be described as pro-Palestinian (64% pro-Palestinian vs. 63% Republican) and anti-Israel (53% vs. 68%), but that’s where the similarities end. . Republicans are two to three times more likely to view the party as anti-American (Democrats 27% vs. Republicans 63%), anti-Semitic (35% vs. 61%), and pro-Hamas (29% vs. 59%). Democrats are twice as likely to say the protests are anti-war (63% approve vs. 36% approve).

And while a majority of voters continue to support Israelis (57%) over Palestinians (28%) in the conflict, support has steadily declined. Since October, support for Israelis has fallen by 11 points, while support for Palestinians has increased by 10 points.

This change has occurred across the board since October, but is perhaps most pronounced among Democrats, who saw a double-digit decline in support for Israelis (-16) and a decline in support for Palestinians (+14). consistent with the increase. By a 12-point difference, Israeli supporters (76%) are more opposed to campus protests than Palestinian supporters (64%).

Voters remain divided on US support for Israel, with 32% saying it’s too supportive, 30% saying it’s not enough, and 33% saying it’s about right.

Views of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are mixed, with 27% having a favorable opinion, 45% having an unfavorable opinion (18 points negative online rating), and 28% saying they have no opinion of him. This number is unchanged from last month, when they lost by 19 points. Ten years ago, his ratings were net positive by a 6-point margin, but back then he had 43% rating him unfavorable.

Mr. Biden’s employment rating regarding the Israel-Hamas war was 32% approval and 64% disapproval, a negative 32 percentage points. That net rating has doubled since the conflict began, when he was minus-16 (39-55% in November 2023).

This negative change is reinforced by today’s increased disapproval ratings among Republicans (+11) and independents (+16).

The president’s biggest issue is the economy, but he is trailing by 19 points. His ratings on inflation (-30) and border security (-31) are similar to his ratings on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Biden’s overall job rating was 45% approval and 55% disapproval, the highest since January 2023. Biden’s personal favorability rating is also similar, with an approval rating of 44% and a disapproval rating of 56%.

The Fox News poll, conducted May 10-13 and jointly directed by Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), included a random sample of voter files from across the country. Includes interviews with a sample of 1,126 registered voters. Respondents either spoke live with an interviewer via landline (133) and mobile phone (700) or completed the survey online after receiving a text message (293). Results based on the complete sample have a margin of sampling error of ±3 percentage points.
