Fox News projects Democrat wins governor’s seat in Biden’s home state of Delaware

The Fox News Decision Desk projects Democrat Matt Meyer to win the Delaware governor's race, strengthening the left's grip on the small northeastern state that President Biden calls home.

Meyer, the New Castle County executive, defeated Mike Ramone, the Republican minority leader in the Delaware House of Representatives.

The small state has long been known as a Democratic stronghold, with liberals holding all three seats in the Congressional delegation and a majority in the state Legislature.

Biden served in the U.S. Senate from 1973 to 2009.

Meyer, who won a three-way primary and advanced to the general election in November, was the only Democrat in Dover with no political experience.

Before entering politics, Meyer started “a recycled shoe company that sells eco-friendly footwear to customers in 17 countries on five continents” while living in Kenya, according to his campaign website.

He then spent 12 months in Iraq as a diplomat with the U.S. military during Operation Enduring Freedom, before returning to his home state of Delaware to work as a teacher.

As governor, Meyer has pledged to further invest in Delaware's public school system, “more equitably funding English language learners and low-income students,” in a policy booklet posted on his campaign website. I swore.

Mr. Meyer also pledged to expand jobs in clean energy and invest in innovations that improve the walkability and bikeability of Delaware's communities.

Popular Democratic Gov. John Carney was ineligible to run again because he had reached the two-term limit.

But Meyer's victory came as little surprise. Delaware has not had a Republican governor since January 1993, and registered Democrats significantly outnumber Republicans.
