Fox News Dominates Ratings While CNN Struggles

Last week revealed some intriguing shifts in television ratings. Fox News came out on top, surpassing all other broadcast networks, as CNN experienced its weakest week of the year.

From May 26th to May 30th, Fox News averaged 2.7 million viewers in weekday prime time. For comparison, NBC and CBS both attracted 2.4 million, while ABC garnered 2.3 million. Quite a lead for Fox, I’d say.

Interestingly, CNN’s numbers were particularly low. Their weekday average was a mere 308,000 viewers, while during prime time, they settled at only 374,000.

Viewer Demographics

When looking at the all-important demographics targeted by advertisers aged 25-54, Fox again performed well. They brought in about 175,000 demo viewers overall and 240,000 during prime time. CNN, in contrast, managed only 49,000 and 61,000 in the same categories. It’s kind of shocking, really, how significant the gap is.

This week marked a significant achievement for Fox News, as they obtained the highest share of cable news viewers since inauguration week. Meanwhile, CNN had its lowest ratings. It’s one of those moments that makes you wonder about the changing dynamics of viewer preferences.

What’s Next for MSNBC?

On a different note, MSNBC is aiming to improve its lineup with Jen Psaki, yet estimates suggest she may only attract 47% of her predecessor’s audience. It creates an interesting contrast to Fox’s ongoing strong performance.

Shows like “Five” emerged as leaders, pulling in an impressive 3.7 million viewers and 409,000 in the target demographics. Other programs on Fox, such as “Special Report” and “Ingraham Angle,” continue to show robust viewer engagement, indicating a well-established viewer base.

The latest evaluation data was presented by Nielsen Media Research. It will be fascinating to see how these trends evolve in the coming weeks.
