Drone Attack in Iraq Claims Life of French Soldier
France has identified Arnaud Furion, a highly regarded chief warrant officer, as the soldier who lost his life in a recent drone strike at an Iraqi military base.
Political leaders across France have expressed their condolences to the family of Furion, who served in the 7th Alpine Jäger Division. He was killed while stationed at a joint French-Peshmerga military base in Erbil, participating in operations against Islamic State extremists. The attack involved Iranian-made Shahid drones, resulting in one fatality and injuries to five others.
The injured soldiers are currently being transported back from Iraq.
A statement from the French government indicated that Warrant Officer Furion “died after being hit by a Shahid drone in his position.” Having joined the military in 2004, the 42-year-old Furion had an illustrious career, marked by five tours in Mali, two in Afghanistan, and deployments in Chad, Ivory Coast, and Niger, before arriving in Iraq this January.
He earned distinction for valor, receiving medals for bravery twice in Afghanistan and once in Niger. In 2021, he was to be awarded France’s highest military honor. Furion leaves behind a wife and child.
This marks the first combat death of a French soldier in Iraq since 2023, and the nation is in mourning. Army Chief of Staff Pierre acknowledged his service, praising Furion as a “fine soldier and leader” who exemplified France’s highest values.
French President Emmanuel Macron offered his condolences and criticized the drone attack on French forces engaged in counter-terrorism efforts. He stated that France would not seek retribution for Furion’s death but will continue to stand firm in its defense strategies.
Macron highlighted that French forces were attacked while acting as part of a United Nations coalition, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable. He underscored France’s defensive stance and reiterated that the country is not at war with anyone, committing to protect its interests and security.
No explicit mention has been made regarding the Iranian connection to the drone used in the attack, but a technical investigation is underway to clarify the origins of the drone.
Leader of France’s Inclusive Left Alliance, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, took the occasion to criticize US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling attention to the broader implications of the evolving conflict. He warned that the French have become unintended victims in this geopolitical struggle, expressing support for the wounded and their families.
Others, like Marine Le Pen, offered condolences without diving deeply into politics. She condemned the assault on French troops and affirmed the importance of protecting national interests in the region.
Bruno Letailault from the conservative République party shared similar sentiments, expressing pride in French soldiers and thoughts for their families.
According to reports, the pro-Iranian militia Ashab al-Khaff has not claimed responsibility for the attack but announced intentions to target all French interests in retaliation for France’s military positioning in the region.
