World Cup Controversy Over Yellow Card Appeal

The excitement around the World Cup is undeniable, but it’s also getting tangled in controversy. Reports suggest that the French Football Federation has appealed to FIFA, requesting that Michael Oliseh’s yellow card be rescinded following France’s Round of 16 victory over Paraguay.

Oliseh, who shone during the 2026 World Cup with five assists in just five matches, faced suspension after a heated exchange with Paraguayan player Matias Galarza.

In a dramatic moment, Galarza fell to the ground clutching his face, but replays indicated that Oliseh never even touched him. If Oliseh receives another yellow card in the upcoming game against Morocco, he would miss a potential semi-final match — an outcome no one wants to see.

The match against Paraguay was particularly intense, with emotions running high as the underdog South American team aimed to upset a European heavyweight. Rayan Cherki described the match as a “war,” expressing frustration over the refereeing. “Referee, I don’t have much to say. We all saw it, right? They had how many fouls? 30, 40? And no yellow cards? But who cares? We’re in the quarter-finals now,” Cherki commented.

This appeal adds to the drama following FIFA’s decision to suspend Folarin Balogun for a red card he received earlier, which controversially allowed him to play against Belgium on Monday. Interestingly, it was previously believed that no appeals would be accepted during the World Cup until President Trump intervened regarding a contentious red card given against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thomas Tuchel, the manager for England, also weighed in, questioning the lack of consistency in FIFA’s decisions. “Will France get Olise’s yellow card back? Where does it begin and end? Should we mention Jarrell Quansah in this context? Shouldn’t Harry Kane reach out to President Trump?” he mused.

Adding to the tension, UEFA has criticized Balogun’s suspension as “unprecedented and unjust.” Moreover, British Labor MPs are calling for an appeal related to Quansah’s red card in a match against England.
