Questions arise about VAR inconsistencies after Folarin Balogun's disputed red card in USMNT's World Cup victory.

Concerns Over VAR’s Inconsistency in World Cup Match

Video assistant referee (VAR) technology is facing criticism from players, as several, including former U.S. national team forward Hercules Gomez, have voiced their discontent regarding its inconsistent application. This comes after a controversial red card was issued to U.S. star Folarin Balogun during Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup.

The referees reviewed the footage and determined that Balogun had stepped on an opponent’s foot, resulting in a red card that will keep him from participating in the upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium.

Gomez expressed his frustration on ESPN, saying, “It was a situational action… In slow motion, it looks terrible. It appears as if he collided with the opponent’s Achilles heel, but it’s an easy call to dissect. The real issue is the inconsistency of VAR and FIFA.” He added, “What’s good for one player isn’t the same for another.”

Having scored three goals, including one in the match against Bosnia, Balogun’s absence could be impactful for the U.S. team.

In a critical moment during the match, Balogun inadvertently stepped on Tarik Muharemovic’s foot, prompting a VAR review. The examination showed enough contact to warrant the red card, forcing the U.S. to continue playing with one less player for the remainder of the game.

Team USA’s manager, Mauricio Pochettino, shared Gomez’s sentiments, declaring that the decision was “not a red card by any means.” He referenced a similar incident involving Argentina’s Lionel Messi earlier in the tournament, where Messi’s play resulted in no cards, highlighting a disparity in officiating standards.

Gomez pointed out the contradiction: “Messi does similar things without getting penalized. It’s puzzling. When Balogun’s actions are reviewed frame by frame, sure, there’s contact, but to give him a red card seems unjust. The inconsistency frustrates both fans and analysts alike.” He concluded, “If I were still playing, it would drive me crazy to see such disparities in officiating.”
