France Will Acknowledge A Palestinian State

France to Recognize Palestinian State at Upcoming UN General Assembly

France plans to formally recognize the Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly in September, as reported by the Associated Press. French President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement in parliament, stating that this decision aims to encourage efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and protect civilians.

Macron emphasized, “Given our historical commitment to just and sustainable peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the Palestinian state. Peace is possible.” This move makes France the most significant European country to recognize Palestine, while Palestinian authorities oversee parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Hamas governs the Gaza Strip.

Palestinians have long sought their own nation, leading to numerous clashes with the Israeli government since the establishment of Israel.

France joins over 140 countries in recognizing the Palestinian state; however, notable powers, such as the United States, have not extended similar recognition. The French government has been critical of Israel, particularly in light of the humanitarian crises affecting both Gaza and the West Bank. Macron expressed support for Israel amidst the Hamas attacks on October 7th, but he has also pushed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cease military actions in Gaza.

As of now, neither the US Embassy in France nor Israel’s Foreign Affairs Department has responded to inquiries regarding this development.
