Mets Suffer Another Loss to Cubs in Nightcap
The Mets faced off against the Cubs in the second game of their doubleheader, which, despite being tighter on the scoreboard, ended with the same disappointing result: a 10-5 defeat.
Six errors committed by the Mets certainly contributed to their loss, marking their fifth straight defeat. This is the highest number of errors the team has recorded in a single game since 2014, and they now find themselves nine games behind in the National League wild-card race with the month of June coming to a close.
In what was a rough outing, every infielder added to the tally of errors, with both Marcus Semien and Mark Vientos each making two mistakes.
Even with Francisco Lindor back in action during this game, the Mets briefly held a lead, thanks in part to a solo home run from Francisco Alvarez and a two-run hit from AJ Ewing, pulling ahead 3-1 in the second inning.
The Cubs threatened in the fourth when Niko Hoerner’s double and a throwing error by Semien put runners on first and third. However, after a crucial single from Pedro Ramirez and a wild pitch from starter Sean Manaea, those runners advanced into scoring position.
Following this, Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong notched back-to-back RBIs, swinging the game’s momentum in the Cubs’ favor and taking a 4-3 lead.
Huascar Brazoban came in to relieve Manaea and managed to retire the next three batters, momentarily halting the Cubs’ assault.
Vientos managed to tie the game at 4-4 with his tenth home run of the season in the fourth inning, but that was short-lived. Brooks Lally, who had just taken the mound, conceded a double and a triple, which quickly turned the game back towards the Cubs, who led by two runs.
A solo homer by Bo Bichette in the sixth inning closed the gap to one run, but a second error from Vientos allowed the Cubs to extend the lead again as Crow-Armstrong advanced to second base courtesy of his mistake.
In a tense ninth inning, the Cubs surged ahead, scoring three additional runs to round off their victory, sealing the game at 10-5.
