Franklin Graham Clarifies His Comments on Supporting Trump's Reelection

Evangelist Franklin Graham recently made a mistake during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, where he mistakenly encouraged people to re-elect President Donald Trump, despite the fact that the U.S. Constitution limits a president to two terms.

Graham, who leads Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, shared his support for Trump and pointed out his achievements. He expressed his admiration, stating, “He loves his country. And I love Donald Trump! Is he perfect? No. But I love that man. I love him.” He also emphasized the uniqueness of Trump, saying, “There will never be another president like Donald Trump, never,” and stressed the need to do everything possible to re-elect him for the sake of religious freedom and support for Christians.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly states that no one can be elected president more than twice. This amendment was ratified following President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented fourth term. Before FDR, presidents like George Washington opted not to serve more than two terms, even when it wasn’t explicitly forbidden by law.

The amendment also restricts a vice president from being elected more than once to serve as president, as well as limiting a president to a term of less than two years.

Although President Trump has indicated a desire to run for a third term, he has acknowledged he cannot do so in 2025. His remarks have seemingly fueled interest in “Trump 2028” merchandise. He mentioned, “If you read it, it’s very clear. I’m not allowed to run. It’s a shame.”

Later, Graham acknowledged his mistake, clarifying to church leaders that he had misspoken. He recalled, “At the beginning of my remarks, I asserted that ‘President Trump is not on the ballot, but his policies are on the ballot.’ I meant to say that we need to reelect President Trump’s policies, but I misspoke. Thank you for the opportunity to clear up any confusion.”
