Franklin Graham Delivers Message of Hope in Buenos Aires
This past weekend, tens of thousands of Argentines gathered in a stadium better known for raucous soccer matches to hear Franklin Graham share a message of hope through Christ. It was a nostalgic moment, occurring about 34 years after his father, Billy Graham, held a similar event there.
The event, named Esperanza (Hope), drew an impressive crowd of around 75,000 people over two nights at Vélez Stadium. Even though rain fell on the first night and the weather remained cool throughout, more than 8,400 individuals made commitments to Christ. The program featured musical performances by notable artists such as Michael W. Smith and Charity Gale, among others.
“If you don’t remember anything tonight, just remember this: God loves you,” Graham told the enthusiastic crowd. He emphasized that “God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, from heaven to earth, not to condemn us, but to save us.”
Vélez Stadium, a historical venue, has hosted significant events, including matches during the 1978 World Cup. On Friday night, approximately 30,000 attendees braved the rain to hear Graham, while Saturday saw attendance soar to over 42,000.
Graham remarked, “In the Bible, rain is a sign of blessing,” and he seemed hopeful about the spiritual impact of the event, stating, “I believe we are going to see God’s blessings poured out here tonight.”
He shared the parable of the prodigal son, referencing how people often chase after material wealth, only to find it unfulfilling. “People are searching for purpose and meaning in their lives,” he said. “But something is missing. There is a vacuum in your heart that can only be filled by God. God has a plan for your life.”
He urged the crowd to respond to what he saw as God’s invitation. “Have your sins been forgiven? Are you sure?” Graham asked, encouraging those unsure to come forward. “God wants to put his arms around you and embrace you tonight.”
Many people, including a man named Federico, stepped forward into the cool night. Federico shared his journey, saying, “The message of forgiveness touched my heart. Years ago, I fell into drugs, alcohol, and all sorts of other sins. And today, God gave me the opportunity to change.”
While Federico knows that the road to recovery won’t be smooth, he feels reassured knowing he has a community of Christians supporting him. “I felt a big hug, a hug that I needed for a long time,” he expressed emotionally. “I have been away from God for too long, but today I am back. I want more of God and intimacy with Him.”
