Freddy Peralta Reflects on His Season
Recently, Freddy Peralta shared his thoughts on several Mets starting pitchers, but the discussion soon shifted to his own performance this season.
When asked about how he feels about his season, he responded, “I think it’s good. I know I can do more, and it’s a long season. It’s been a lengthy journey, but I need to continue pushing forward. There are many positives for both me and the team.”
Following the Mets’ 6-3 victory on Saturday, he acknowledged that a strong showing in Sunday’s Subway Series would be a promising start.
“There were a lot of emotions, maybe even more than what I’ve experienced before, especially when I was in Milwaukee playing against the Cubs,” he mentioned, noting the intense rivalry. “New York feels different. I’m reallylooking forward to it.”
Peralta has made nine starts with the Mets, recording a 3.10 ERA. Interestingly, he has posted a 1.99 ERA over his last four starts, even though his team won only two of those games, reflecting their offensive struggles.
He was also asked about rookie Nolan McLean, who has been making an impact in the rotation alongside Peralta and Clay Holmes, currently sidelined with a fractured right fibula.
“Everything about McLean is impressive,” Peralta remarked. “His presence on the mound, his emotions—his pitching is outstanding. The metrics support it too. I think he has a bright future ahead and could become one of the best players.”
Another young pitcher, Christian Scott, is set to start for the Mets on Monday against Washington.
“He has already demonstrated a great fastball and sweeper,” Peralta said about Scott. “We even discussed how fantastic his fastball is while we were in Colorado. Hitters aren’t satisfied with it, and he has so much potential. I truly believe he will shine.”
Meanwhile, Juan Soto is dealing with some wrist discomfort from his swings as well as sore feet from a foul ball. Yet, manager Carlos Mendoza is cautious about resting his star player.
“As long as he doesn’t risk injury, he’ll keep playing,” Mendoza assured.
On Saturday, Soto managed to go 2-for-2 with two hits, a walk, and two stolen bases.
Additionally, Carson Benge recorded three hits, marking his second multi-hit game this season. He boasts an impressive .983 OPS over his last 12 games.
The Mets are performing well, currently at 9-5 for the month of May.
