Emotional Moments for Hurricanes Goalie After Agent’s Death
Frederik Andersen, the Hurricanes’ goalie, expressed deep emotions on Friday as he prepared for the Stanley Cup Final, following the tragic death of his long-time agent, Claude Lemieux.
Authorities confirmed that Lemieux, a former NHL great, passed away by suicide at the age of 60.
After the Hurricanes triumphed over the Canadiens to secure the Eastern Conference title, Andersen appeared visibly shaken during a postgame interview on TNT. He noted, “It’s been a tough few days, but what we accomplished today, well, it’s been incredible for the team and for each other.” His voice quivered as he spoke.
He added, “I can’t express enough gratitude for this team and the support they’ve given me.”
Andersen went on, saying, “We’re like family. It means so much to show up for him and make him proud.”
When asked what Lemieux might have said after the victory, Andersen responded, “Just go get it. He was the ultimate competitor but had the biggest heart, always wanting the best for me and this team.”
Authorities revealed that Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup champion, died by hanging.
Colombe Lacroix, a close family friend present at the scene, mentioned that Lemieux had struggled with depression. Notably, he had been cheerful just days earlier when he carried the torch for one of his former teams, the Canadiens, at the Bell Center before a game. However, friends expressed concern that this seemingly uplifting moment might have also stirred deeper emotions for Lemieux.
“That wave of love on Monday night might have brought back old feelings and suffering,” said Réjean Tremblay, a veteran hockey columnist and friend of Lemieux.
Tremblay also pointed out that Lemieux faced considerable disappointment after his retirement in 2009, feeling sidelined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. “The feeling of rejection weighed heavily on him. He took it really seriously,” he remarked.
Lemieux was discovered in his family’s furniture store in Palm Beach County, Florida.
