Freight train hits septic truck at Virginia crossing, causing sewage spill

Train and Septic Tank Truck Collision in Virginia

Recently, a freight train collided with a septic tank truck at a railroad crossing in Virginia, leading to significant damage to the truck and a sewage spill on the scene. The Chesapeake Police Department reported that the accident occurred on May 14, around 4 p.m. Witness footage captured the moment the septic tank truck crossed the tracks just as a Norfolk Southern train struck it.

The truck was knocked over, spilling sewage from its tank onto the ground. Preliminary investigations suggest that the truck did not stop at a stop sign prior to the collision. According to a police Facebook update, this incident is still under active investigation.

Azria O’Daniel, who filmed the event, mentioned to WAVY-TV that the train conductor sounded the horn loudly to alert the driver of the approaching train. O’Daniel expressed concern that many people might not understand the dynamics at play. “I think a lot of people don’t realize that they’re not cars. They don’t have rubber tires,” he said, explaining how the steel of the train can create sparks when they collide.

Interestingly, he pointed out that the crossing is located on private property, which means it lacks typical warning devices that one might expect.

When authorities arrived at the site, they found the truck rolled over and the male driver seriously injured. Fortunately, reports indicated that he was in stable condition shortly thereafter, although his name has not been released. Norfolk Southern confirmed that there were no injuries among the train crew.

Police noted that while the situation created a mild hazardous condition due to spilled fuel, there was no immediate threat to public safety. Further inquiries have been made to the Chesapeake Police Department for more details.
